3 Easy Skincare Tips for Black Men to Rejuvenate and Repair their Skin

Between scurrying through to-do lists and maintaining a (somewhat) social atmosphere, it can be hard to maintain the self-care mojo that we once had, especially when it comes to skincare. Nonetheless, it’s always important to set time aside for the things that matter, and skincare should always be on that list. When we actively neglect our skin, we set ourselves up for ageing fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and in some cases even skin cancer. Have you forsaken your skin?

Here are three skincare tips to achieve younger-looking and healthier skin!

1.) SPF Is Important

The idea that only our fair-skinned friends need protection from the sun is one of the oldest myths in the book. Though darker, more melanated skin can withstand more does not mean that it isn’t being damaged. While melanin in most black people can naturally account for a sun protection factor (SPF) of 13.4, the Skin Cancer Foundations recommend that everyone apply one ounce of SPF 15 sunscreen daily. Though wrinkles and ageing are also effects of sun damage, this is extremely important due to the high mortality rate of skin cancer for darker skin due to late or no detection.

2.) Vitamin C Serum Is Your Best friend

Hyperpigmentation and skin discolouration are already very common, however, it's extremely common for those of us that shave. Adding an impactful vitamin C serum to your daily skincare routine is proven to not only reduce the damage done by razor bumps and acne scars but also tighten and moisturise the skin to promote elasticity and firmness.

3.) Moisturise! Moisturise! Moisturise!

Though serums do nourish your skin, it’s highly important to lock in that hydration with a moisturiser. Despite men having thicker skin than women, their thicker dermal layer Shaving and trimming can often lead to skin sensitivity, making it hard to find products that don't include harsh ingredients.

I personally recommend Temple’s Essential Daily Moisturiser. This product in specific features healthy key ingredients that you don’t get in the average moisturiser such as rose-hip and grape-seed oil. This in combination with the hyaluronic acid creates a formula made to both moisturise and protect.

Self-care is important, especially when it comes to your skin. All too frequently we forget the importance of self-prioritisation, especially when it seems as though you need a ten-step daily skincare routine to accomplish it. Nonetheless, healthier and firmer skin can be easy to obtain, you just have to mindful of the skin that you’re in.
